OVERVIEW

Chuka is a typeface designed based on my love for contemporary art specifically the artist Marianne Zazeela. She was a musician, designer, painter, calligrapher, and light artist. Her work is very technical, it has both a meditative and psychedelic aspect to it. Chuka takes influence from her minimalist yet psychedelic feel and is constructed to be a font but also a piece of art. Each letter can be repeated and mirrored to become a pattern. Therefore it becomes a decorative display font that balances both hand-drawn qualities with the symmetry and cleanliness of Zazeela's art.

Letter Set

REGULAR

The regular font features the whole alphabet. The font has high contrast and juxtaposes the hand-drawn qualities of some letters with perfect symmetry in others.

BOLD

The bold font features the whole alphabet layered to give the psychedelic quality of the font. If the user selects a dark color for the font the bottom layer will be 3 tints lighter. If the user selects a bright color the bottom layer comes out 3 shades darker.

GRAPHICS

Taking inspiration from Marianne Zazeela's endless patterns and incredible penmanship, I designed CHUKA to be able to be looked at both as a letter as well as a pattern. These gifs show the duality of the letters to be seen both as a decorative font as well as hypnotizing art.
